Ahead of today’s markup of the Marijuana Opportunity, Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act in the House Judiciary Committee, US Cannabis Council CEO Steven Hawkins issued the following statement:
“In the midst of historic negotiations over the budget, infrastructure and debt limit, we’re encouraged to see forward motion on another issue of historic proportions—ending Washington’s disastrous, decades-long experiment with cannabis prohibition. The MORE Act would end federal prohibition by descheduling cannabis as a controlled substance. It would also expunge low-level federal cannabis charges and convictions and prevent the federal government from discriminating on the basis of cannabis use.
“Under Chairman Jerry Nadler’s leadership, the House Judiciary Committee is set to advance the MORE Act to the House floor for a vote. USCC supports the bill and thanks the chairman for his ongoing leadership in advancing social equity and criminal justice as centerpieces of cannabis reform.
“The negative impacts of cannabis prohibition are far-reaching and longstanding. Real change requires new laws that impact everything from criminal justice and racial equity to taxation and banking. We urge Congress to forge ahead with a broad reform agenda that ends cannabis prohibition and provides a framework for an equitable, responsible and prosperous cannabis industry.”
